Dystopian or Utopian? Eight developments that will directly affect your life over the next 3-5 years. From Social Futurist Chet W. Sisk at LEAD Global.
There is a massive transformation taking place in the world. It is unprecedented in scope and unlike anything we've known in the history of humanity. Few people know it's happening because it hasn't been articulated and the conversation has been avoided.
We at LEAD Global hope that we're helping provide some clarity so that you have a clearer picture of what's happening, what's at stake and what you can do in both a potential dystopian or utopian world. Everything depends on what decisions we make around these 8 pressing developments that will affect you, your family, your community and the world over the next 3-5 years.
The income inequality divide between the 1% and the rest of us is getting dramatically wider. It's happening around the world and it's speeding up.http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/12/30/any-way-you-calculate-it-income-inequality-is-getting-worse/
Why should I care?--- More at the top means less for you at the bottom. You and your children will have fewer resources to live a quality life. Concentration of wealth in the hands of a few usually amounts to trouble. Think Elysium, The Matrix or Children of Men as movie references.
What can I do? --- Start creating community wealth. Group entrepreneurship, community CO-OP gardens, banking in credit unions and community banks are good starts in creating shared wealth. The technology exists to make this much easier.
A large portion of jobs will simply disappear because of technological unemployment. Our initial prediction at LEAD Global was that this development was still 5-7 years out. Because of the rapid rate in machine learning and AI development, we've revised our estimation of mass unemployment to gain speed in 2017 and will start to make itself felt over the next 2-3 years.
Why should I care? The initial thought was that this would eliminate low paying drudgery jobs. Now, analytical and management jobs are at risk. Smarter machines are actually making smarter machines.
What can I do? We cannot put the genie back in the bottle (nor should we want to) but we can start to forward ideas and legislation that protect our futures. Universal Basic Income, utilizing massive available human capital for the good of humanity, supporting entrepreneurship and "giggers" (people who work temporary jobs) are good starts.
Autonomous automobiles will dramatically reduce the tax base of cities and municipalities. I talked about this last week. From auto sales, service, registration, licensing, parking, fines and tickets, cities will be dramatically affected by the loss of income they have come to enjoy from our auto experience. https://backchannel.com/self-driving-cars-will-improve-our-cities-if-they-dont-ruin-them-2dc92034561...
Why should I care? There will be fewer services from your city because it has fewer dollars.
What can I do? Star to talk to your local representatives about what their plan is for the city going forward. This isn't a far off thing. This is the next 2-3 years.
Major world powers are not leading on climate change contingency. This lack of leadership may go down as one of the most disturbing moments in the history of humanity. http://www.npr.org/2016/08/18/479349760/should-we-be-having-kids-in-the-age-of-climate-change
Why should I care? Obvious reasons.
What can I do? Get involved. Allowing your governments to be cavalier about your future and the future of your children is on you. It's your responsibility.
The Age of Abundance Is here. Technology has set the stage for incredible efficiencies in energy and food production. https://medium.com/basic-income/post-capitalism-rise-of-the-collaborative-commons-62b0160a7048#.xu0b... Combine this with a Universal Basic Income that invites people to help develop the arts, science, innovation and enlightenment and we could be on to something.
Why should I care? If you are out of a job, having a society that takes care of your basic needs can free up your thinking and allow you to pursue your noble dreams.
What can I do? You must start looking up everything you can about Zero Cost Abundance, Zero Cost Energy and Foods, 3-D Printing and The Sharing Economy. This will give you the ability to start having these kinds of conversations with others.
There is a big conversation happening about Universal Basic Employment Training and Income. It may be happening outside of the traditional political circles, but it is happening. https://www.singularityweblog.com/ubet-technological-unemployment/
Why should I care? Chances are good, you will be in need of these services.
What can I do? Check in with Meetup groups to see who is having these kinds of conversations. Get talking and find out who is doing what.
A new set of values are emerging. As it turns out, the skills necessary to thrive and succeed in the new technological reality are also many of the kind of values we seek in each other. These are skills that used to be called "soft". The new skills in demand include emotional intelligence, creativity, transparency, problem solving and the desire to serve others. https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/01/the-10-skills-you-need-to-thrive-in-the-fourth-industrial-rev...
Why should I care? Now is the time to develop these skills so that you can be part of this world wide shift.
What can I do now? Look at the skills listed in the story and find out where you can get training for them.
We have a chance to push the reset button. Everything from social justice issues, war, immigration and personal empowerment now get re-examined in this time of change. Old social models that ruled the day were guided by the scarcity economic model. Here is an opportunity to rethink everything. That's not just nice happy talk. This is the time when the foundation for a new world is being set.
Why should I care? This is about you, the quality of your life and the life of your children.
What can I do now? Start to imagine what life in a new world could look like if you had a button to start all over again.
Myself and Yoga/Meditation teacher David Stevens are putting together an afternoon workshop in the Denver Metropolitan Area of how to combine understanding of the grand world shift with the conscious tools of meditation, intuition, vision and personal empowerment. It is a unique gathering that is designed to help you get unstuck and find purpose and meaning in a time of great change. Here are the subjects we'll cover...
