Fossil fuel companies are vulnerable with "stranded assets". It's time to have a sit down with them. A briefing from Futurist Chet W. Sisk
Despite what the current administration in the US is doing to thwart the efforts of renewables to play a role in future energy needs, renewables, particularly solar energy, will take a large chunk of energy currency away from fossil fuels over the next few years. The fossil fuel industry companies have worth based on how much potential oil reserves they own that's in the ground and yet to be retrieved. As renewables continue to increase their share of the marketplace, those potential assets become "stranded" and lose value, thus, the companies lose value....
So, what would happen if emerging organizations dedicated to doing regenerative work in the world (that is, instead of sustaining the institutions in the world, we focus on pushing the reset button and re-imagine institutions), negotiate with the fossil fuel companies to transfer their valuation of those stranded assets to companies doing next generation renewable energy and community development work?
Yeah, I know. I hear some of you saying "why would these kinds of people want to invest in something like regeneration?" True. Since these industry barons are used to the idea of zero sum outcomes, cornering markets, exploiting resources and controlingj means as a road to profit, this could seem like a values conflict between two different communities. But what if we simply introduce the idea, with rules? Could we be assuming too much? Could an initial conversation be a good way to measure how they may feel about this? I say yes. A conversation doesn't mean we agree. It only means we want to create an opportunity for all sides of this conversation. The truth is, the rate of renewable energy growth, along with falling fossil fuel use due to autonomous cars is forcing this conversation with traditional energy companies right now. We can at least provide them with an option to put money and investment in the good of the planet and humanity. Besides, if profit is their motivation, holding onto fossil fuel potential stranded in rock seems like an unsuccessful pathway forward.
What is happening?
A few years ago, I provided a more elaborate conversation of what's happening in the world right now with Dee Myers of the Association for Global New Thought. We are in the middle of a gigantic transition. We should act and plan accordingly. Check out this audio. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bI2MFAWN1g
