You can call it the world paradigm shift, the fourth industrial revolution, the great turning or whatever helps you sleep at night, we are at the beginning of a dramatic change in the way the world operates. No other time in human history equates to this. We are in unknown territory. You're going to start to hear a lot of people provide their version of a way forward in this time of transition. We at LEAD Global have been advocating evidence-based ideas for a number of years, but decided that we want to step up our call for a re-thinking of new infrastructure and possibilities because of the urgency of the moment.
Here are some hard truths about the Fourth Industrial Revolution/World Shift you'll want to remember as you get bombarded with data. Don't let the immediacy of everything scare you into supporting ideas that are unsustainable.
"If we teach our kids coding, they'll be able to get a job in the new technology-based world". Coding schools are springing up all over the place with the idea that this is the super highway to getting one of those good jobs of the future. Well, not so much. Remember when you had to be a coder to build websites? Now it's all drag and drop. The speed of machine learning is killing this idea quickly. My friend Ken Granville with Mind Aptive explains it better in this article. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/teach-kids-how-code-hmm-ken-granville
"The massive social disruption that will be caused by driverless cars is years out". Try again. How about THIS year? All of our calculations are suggesting up to a 40% revenue drop by cities and municipalities once autonomous cars take hold and eliminate speeding tickets, parking revenue, registration, etc. Check out what Tesla is doing...https://electrek.co/2017/01/24/tesla-enhanced-autopilot-to-fully-self-driving-says-elon-musk/
"The Fourth Industrial Revolution/World Shift will level the playing field". Not so fast. Yes, it has the potential to empower more people than any other time in the history of humanity, but that all depends on what we do over the next 3-5 years. If we allow leaders of old paradigm thinking to dominate this shift, we may see dramatically rising inequality all around the world. "Bitcoin is a nice idea, but someone could pull the plug and shut it down". It wouldn't surprise me if traditional financial institutions were spreading this myth. For those of you who don't know of it, there is a new kind of currency form spreading around the world. It's called Crypto-Currency. Bitcoin is one version of this. It's open sourced and transparent so no one country or institution owns it. It will be the way of world trade over the next few years for small companies, giggers, entrepreneurs, middle managers, independent contractors as well as large companies. "The best business models are the traditional ones that have stood the test of time". Not anymore. Chances are good you're probably operating from a business model from the 20th century. That also means you're probably reading about or even getting advice from sources that used 20th century business models. In the Fourth Industrial Revolution/World Shift, your company is going to have to run on what it knows and reinvent itself at the same time. This is new to almost everyone. That's also true for leadership. Check out this article from the World Economic Forum..https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2016/10/four-leadership-principles-for-the-fourth-industrial-revoluti....
